Ask for Jake is a voluntary organisation within Braunton set up in the wake of Jake Mcphail’s suicide in 2019. Since then, ask for Jake has been set up to help the local community with emotional wellbeing and to set up key training and events for suicide prevention.

Every week, 125 people in the UK die from suicide. The misconception can be that talking about suicide encourages it to happen. The opposite of this is in fact true and by starting conversations, it can help to make a difference and save lives.

How does ask for Jake help?

Drop in Talk Shops

Talk Shop is held via a weekly drop-in peer to peer support. It is held every Saturday 10 - 11am, & also the first Friday of the month 6:30 - 7:30pm, at the Ask for Jake Hub in South Street, Braunton. Once a month you’ll see me at the Hub offering anyone some time who anyone need a chat. Connecting with others can make a huge difference in supporting mental health and emotional wellbeing.

Fundraisers

Ask for Jake gets involved with local events, whether this be at a summer fair or at a music festival. You’ll find us spreading the word about how we can help our local community by running days out and courses such as Chill Swim Courses, fully funded by ask for Jake. Bracelets and other items are sold to raise money and awareness for such an important cause.

Peer Youth Talk

Sometimes people want to talk to a non professional peer and wish to talk to someone who might have gone through similar struggles in their life. Ask for Jake is always there for a chat. Peer Talk, is an online Zoom meeting where you chat person to person with someone who understands. Send an email to peertalk@askforjake.org.uk for a Zoom chat.
